"Gray Moth Sugarz" were a popular candy made from the dried
bodies of the Sugary Gray Moth. While the moth was a source
of sugar for the Forñioleno Indians, overexploitation by Spanish,
Mexican and American settlers led nearly to the insect's extinction.
While the candy is still made today, and looks just like the original,
the actual moths are no longer part of the recipe. Sugar spun in
a local candy factory has replaced the destruction of this very rare
and odd species of California insect.
